The speaker discusses the concept of "iPad Kids," referring to the generation born after 2012 who are constantly exposed to screens and technology. This unrestricted access to technology has led to a lack of imaginative play, shorter attention spans, and entitlement to technology. Teachers are finding it difficult to handle these children who are used to constant screen time. Additionally, the speaker highlights the dangers of unrestricted access to social media for young children and the importance of parental controls. Some believe that this is just a result of technological changes in each generation, but others are concerned about the negative effects on children's development. Research has shown that excessive screen time is associated with poor sleep and lower performance on developmental tests. The speaker emphasizes the need for children to engage in physical play and suggests that parents should limit screen time and provide physical toys for their children's development. Hello everyone, this is Care of Right, and today we're going to be discussing iPad Kids. I think many of us have heard about iPad Kids. If not, it's basically the new generation born after 2012, also known as Gen Alpha. It's also the generation after Gen Z. These kids are basically being raised by millennials and don't have restricted access to screens and technology. Basically, in order to pacify their children, they give them an iPad or turn on the TV to keep them entertained. These patterns are leading the children to not know how to play. They almost have no experience playing with others, and I believe that with the lack of physical toys, the children have less of imagination and creativity. This new generation also lacks attention span and concentration because they can use several screens at once and are able to quickly scan information. They also watch short videos rather than long TV shows, leading more towards their short attention spans. iPad Kids also feel entitled to technology, leading to fits and tantrums. If you try and take the iPad away or try and turn off the TV, any of these, try and make them go outside, they will have a tantrum and can't handle it. So, when the students get to school, where they can't have access to technology all the time, they start to act out. This is causing teachers to quit due to seemingly uncontrollable children. They have no idea how to handle the children being like this because the children can't have access to a tablet 24-7. Another issue with children's unrestricted access to technology and the internet is that they can get onto social media. They get on earlier and earlier every year, and these children don't know how to navigate social media safely. And a lot of the time, it's difficult for the adults to keep the creeps off their page. The parents aren't making any effort to teach their kids or restrict the very obvious things from their phone. I know children hate it, but they do have the parental access where you can just keep at least part of the information off their phones and off of their social medias if they're going to be on it so early in life. Some believe that this is just hysteria due to the fact that there's been a significant technological change every generation. People believe that the TV generation would be bad, or the video game kids. I think that with time, the next generations just keep getting progressively worse. This slightly has to do with the generation of those starting to grow up with technology and had it nearer to when they were adults. The people who are raising this generation are millennials, who would be considered those who grew up watching TV. Their parents just sat them down to watch TV, but with the millennials, there was the difference of they were sent outside, and they had to play outside, and they couldn't just sit and watch TV all day long, like with the iPad kids. There has been some concern from Gen Z. They don't want to be responsible for bringing up the next generation as iPad kids. They want to turn away from the technology a little bit in respect to how they raise their children. Kai Xiong Tao wrote in his article about how Gen Z is worried about raising a generation of iPad kids, that researchers looking into how technology has been affecting children found that in about 90% of those studies, found too much screen time was associated with poor sleep. And in 2019, Canadian researchers found that children who spent more time on screens tended to perform poorly on tests measuring early childhood development. I think it may not be the easy way, but you have to be there for the children now and in the future, especially when it's your own. Children need to have simulation, but not from a screen. They should be building their creativity and imagination by being active in their life, by having the toys, the physical toys in their life to play with. .
