In New Brunswick, everyone spoke French because it was a French colony settled in 1604. The settlers traded with the Mi'kmaq people and developed a good relationship. The Acadians and the First Nations people were proud and independent. However, their independence did not last. Bonjour mes amis, je m'appelle Evangeline Belfontaine. We settled the river and traded with the Mi'kmaq who lived in the interior. In fact, the First Nations people and the Acadians became good friends. We were proud and fiercely independent. But it was not to last.
