Introduction to the Victor Stream Reader

The Victor Reader is a digital recorder designed for people with low vision or who are blind. It provides access to apps like Bookshare and Wikipedia. It has different models with or without GPS. The device has a microphone, recording functionalities, an SD card slot, a headphone jack, and a speaker. The front of the device has a keypad, sleep button, and playback controls. The left side has the power button and volume controls. The right side has the record button. The device also has different bookshelves for organizing content and a feature for recording voice notes. Welcome, everybody. Welcome to the Zoom technology class, and I'm Pedro, and today's class we're going to get into the Victor Reader. We're going to talk about the overall basic general sense of the device. I'm not going into known GPS. That could be in a later date for more advanced users for connecting to the computer, the companion app is in that inclusion right there too. This is more of a basic introduction to the Victor Reader, and I know some people might have a question with the Victor Reader. What is it for? What does it do? And just to answer some of those questions, a Victor Reader is a digital recorder that is accessible to someone that has low vision or is completely blind. It gives you access to some apps, so you have like Bookshare, you have LNS BARD, you also have like the dictionary, you have Wikipedia for looking up searches and stuff like that. Some different models of the Victor Reader have GPS, some don't. There's different models too, so you might have a different model than what I have, but they're basically almost down the same while we explore the physical parts of the device also. So, this device does include a microphone and different functionalities for recording. Okay, so we're going to start with orientating the device. I'm going to hold the device in front of me, okay, and we're going to explore the sides of the device first so we can orient it. Right now, I have the device in front of me, and if I feel on the left side of the device, I will feel a circle, a triangle pointing up, and another triangle pointing down. And if I go to the other side of the device, I see the charger port, okay. The charger port, if you're holding your device flat like the floor, the charger part will be towards your body, but if you have it in front of you, the charging port should be on the bottom side, pointing to the floor. So, once you have the device orientated like that, and then I will go into the top of the device and explain what's on top of the device, and that's where you could find the SD card. So if you have another SD card you want to put in it that has more memory, go right ahead. The device does have internal memory. I think it's around 16 gigs. I'm not too sure. Different devices may vary, so it's good to have a memory card slot. And then on the right of that slot, we have a phone jack, all right, and it's a three millimeter headphone jack that you even can have connect a mic to this and just record straight off of that mic that you have connected into this device. For those that want a quick side note, this device does record in WAV audio, MP3 audio. So if you like MP3 and small compression sizes, you know, that's pretty good, but if you're into like production and want WAV files, this device is able to handle WAV files also. And you are able to transfer those files out into your digital workstation or wherever you may want to put your notes that are in WAV or MP3. So, and then right behind those two things is the speaker part of the device. Okay, and then I'm going to move to the right side of the device. This is the right edge, and then on the right edge, you feel one button, and that's the record button, all right. And we will get in more into that. Now, now that we have the device oriented, we're actually going to, I'm going to describe the front of the device. The front of the device, you could split it into two parts, the top and then the bottom. And we're going to start with the top. The top has five rows of keys, and I'm going to go through these keys. And on the top row, you have three keys, and then you have a space, and then you have a four-key, four-key, four-row layout, straight like a phone layout, a standard phone with the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, the star, and the pound sign. Think about that. That's the keypad right there, exactly like a standard phone. And then under that, you have a line. That line indicates the split of the device, and then right under that, you have an oval button that is your sleep button. You press it once, you get the time. You press it again, you will get your sleep options. And right below that button, you will have the section of starting from the left, the triangle pointing to the left, that's to go back, the middle triangle, that's your play and pause, and to the right of that, that's your fast forward. Okay? I hope everybody's with that and they were able to keep up with those instructions. In the end of the class, I will have, I will open it up so anyone has questions, I will be there to answer those questions. But I'm going to keep moving for the recording sake. So, now that we are more acquainted with the front layout, okay, and how the device is split, I'm going to start with the first three top buttons. From the left to the right, it is go, and then we have the Wi-Fi button, is what they call it, the circle, and then on the right of that, we have the bookmark button, and then we have the keypad, and I will explain the keypad, but I'm going to also show you I'm going to also show you guys a quick tip that you might want to utilize. And this is, well, let me explain the number pads, okay? Number one is the key you're going to use to switch through the different type of bookshelves you have, your notes, your music, your podcast, and other things like that, and I will go into more depth in that. But right now, we're going to explore this keypad so you guys will get more of a context of what these buttons actually do, and then in a little bit, we will start navigating and go into more detail about that. So, if everybody, if you have your device in front of you, try holding the number zero, driver on, info, zero. So, let me do that again. Key describer on. Key describer info, zero. Okay, so now we got the key describer key on. We have that feature turned on, and now we can press the buttons, and it will tell you what's that button. So, we're going to start from the top left. Go to note. All right, and then from the top left, we're going to, I'm going to do each row, and I'm going to go from left to right, and this is the top right here, the first button. Go to note. Online features. Bookmark. And that's the first row. We're going to continue to the next section, and that will be the keypad. Bookshelf, one. And you will hear that it said bookshelf, one. That's the key that I'm pressing in the keypad. Scroll up, two. Delete note, three. Move back, four. Where am I, five. Move forward, six. Menu, seven. Scroll down, eight. Scroll down, eight. Playback mode, nine. Cancel. Info, zero. Confirm. Okay, and that's some of the explanations of the buttons. So, number one switches from your bookshelves, okay? And if you feel on the keypad, you will feel the number two has an indent, a raised indentation pointing up, letting you know let's navigate up. Number three is manage your books, also known as your delete button. And if you press number three and you're on a book, it won't delete it. You will have to confirm that. That will be the key on the right side of the zero. That's the confirm key. It's what you call a pound star, I guess. But that's the confirm key. You press that and you confirm whatever action the device is telling you to take or is asking you do you want to take this, okay? So, four, you will feel the indentation, the raised indentation to the left. This means that's the left button to go left. Then you have the five key. The five key has the two raised buttons. That's your where am I key. Your where am I key will tell you exactly that. Where place in the book you are or where place in the map you are. So, on the right of that, the six will have an indentation, a raised indentation. That is the right key to go to the right. And seven is the menu. Eight has the indentation on the bottom indicating that this is the arrow down key. And then on the right of that, you have your speech mode key. Playback mode. Oh, no. Playback mode. Let me correct that. And then you have your cancel, your zero, and your confirm all in order from left to right. Okay. And then in the bottom, play and pause. You know, that's self-explanatory right there. Rewind and fast forward. Move by five second increments. Okay. So, now the left side, like I was explaining, has the power button. And then once you have your device on and you press that side button, the circle, you get to your speed, tone, and back to volume. Once there, you could. Volume 9. Volume 10. Volume 11. Volume 14. Volume 15. And there I'm at. Volume 15. When you're outside, it does get louder. When you're outside, it recognizes that you're outside by the GPS location, I guess. But now we're going to explore the device and navigate a couple of books. Turn on Wi-Fi and things like that. So, let me press and hold the zero key to turn off this mode I'm in. Key describer. But there you, I have over 100 something notes and I will go into a couple methods of recording. So, now that we're here, I'm going to explain the recording button. The record button is the right side of the device, the right edge of the device. It's the edge where there's only one button. And to locate where the microphone is at, on the very first button, on the very top, where the go button, go to, that button has, right above it, has a recording button. Right above it has a little, a little pinhole for the microphone right there. The built-in microphone for the device. If you guys are ever wondering where is that located. So, you have two recording modes. You have one that you could just press. And it will start recording. It will beep and start recording. And then you press. It will beep and stop recording. It will tell you. Then there's quick recording. You press and hold. You will hear a beep and then you hear a louder beep indicating that the recording started. Once you, you start talking and you let go of the record button. It will automatically stop recording right there. And save it and you're done. Instead of, you know, however your preference may be. However you want to record. But right now I'll do a quick recording. Stop recording. This is a test. Okay. Note. 114. Created. Four. 114. This is a test. End of note. Okay. And now I just doubled. I just pressed and hold the button and got that quick note. You can also just press it. Get the quick note however you would like. And then press that. And you have your notes. This could come in handy if you need to, you know, get maybe jot down. And I advise against this. But you, once you could put your debit card number or your credit card number. And you record it. And you could recite it to yourself back and forth. So you can once remember that. And then, you know, you delete that note. But I've done it to actually learn my debit card number and stuff like that. That I need to remember. Because I don't like to save that type of information anywhere online. I don't like to ask anybody or, you know, I want to be independent of the way that I like. But I recorded doctor's addresses. I kept meticulous files. When I was also in college, I was keeping notes. And I was doing that. What else? From all types of things. Keeping recipes. People also put their music, movies, shows. And listen to them off the Victor Reader. I'm gonna also give you some, before I forget and before moving on, you do have some key functions on these buttons. If you press and hold, for example, if you press and hold the cancel key, that will be the star key in the standard phone keypad. This happens to the Victor Reader. Locked. And what that means, it locked the keypad. So if you're reading a book and you press any... Locked. Locked. It's locked. The device is actually locked and you could just be letting it play. But just to unlock that, you just press the 1, 2, 3 key. Unlocked. And now your keypad is unlocked. And for those to explore your keypad and other buttons, you just press and hold 0. Key describer on. Info. 0. And you're on your key describer. You press and hold again to turn it off. Key describer. Now key describer is off. And if you press the confirm button, that's to the right of the 0, it will tell you your time. Actually, your battery life and what task is the Victor Reader doing. Battery powered. 63 percent. Downloads info. Not connected to wireless network. And right now I'm not connected to wireless network. It's correct. And that's the next key I want to actually go to. If you're on the top of the device, the first key is the go to. And then the circle key is your connectivity, but it changes from. It's going to give you different functionalities. But if you double tap, I mean, double tap, excuse me. If you press and hold that circle middle key on the top row of the Victor Reader, you will actually take it off our airplane mode. Airplane mode off. Okay, now my airplane mode is off. Now, that means my Bluetooth is on. This is compatible with Bluetooth devices. Now, my Wi-Fi. Right, there you go. It connected to my home Wi-Fi. And I will go into that, how to connect. Once you turn on your you took your device off of airplane mode. Now, we can press the key seven. Menu, navigation and playback. Loop off. Skip all play. Hold on, hold on. Let me see which bookshelf I'm on. Oh, now, this is what's on. Bookshelf, five, books, three. Introduction to generative IE. Okay, excuse that. Now, I'm on the online bookshelf. Let me press the key seven. Menu, wireless. Import a network configuration from file. Okay, so if you're trying to find how to connect to Wi-Fi, you must switch over to online bookshelf. And you do that by pressing that connection key or, I don't know what you want to call it. They have several terms for it, but I call it the circle key. And the online bookshelf and GPS for those that have a VictorTrek. Okay, so if I hit it one more time. Introduction to generative IE. Orientation. GPS ready. Offline bookshelves. Set online bookshelves. Bookshare, five, books, three. And then if I would hold that button, it will turn off. I mean, turn on airplane mode and disable that. That also saves battery life. Is to keep that in mind. Now that we know how to get here, just go back into the seventh. Press the number seven to get into the menu. Menu, wireless. Import a network configuration from file. And this is more if you have the companion app or you connect your device to a computer. You can put your information in that text file. Put it there and it will have all your Wi-Fi information to connect automatically. For next time you boot it up, it will check it. But if we scroll down. Scan for available connections. And I scroll down with the number eight. Like I indicated earlier, that's the down key. Launch a connection. Create a new connection. Delete a connection. Validate connection. Wireless, on. And we're back to the wireless is on. You can turn it off from here also. Airplane mode, off. And airplane mode, you find it here also. Import a network configuration from file. Now we're back to the top. Scan for available connections. And it will tell me to scan for available connections. To insert your network name, you scan and then it will tell you to enter the password. If you know your password, the way you will type something in here, to type in here. Each number in the number pad has letters assigned to it for those that have used the phone, a standard telephone keypad will understand the layout is exactly like that. Number one has your special characters. Number two, ABC. Number three, D, E, F. Number four, G, H, I. Then number five, J, K, L. Number six is M, N, O. M, N, O. And then number seven is P, Q, R, S. And number eight is T, U, V. And the number nine is W, X, Y, and Z. And to get to those, you will have to press the button. For example, I will have to press the number two, two times to get to B. But to get to C, I will press the number two, three times to get to the letter C. Okay. And then I will let it, the device will put a character. So I will demonstrate that a little later once we got a little more time. But it's pressing, let's say, for example, I will press the number two key three times and it will put the number two into the text field. So if you press the key, the number two key once, it will type in the letter A. You press it twice, it will type in the letter B. You press it three times, it will be the letter C. And then the fourth time will be the number of that key. The only exceptions to that rule will be number seven and number nine. Those have four letters in them, like P, Q, R, S. And after the S, you press that one more time and it will give you the number of that key. I hope I was clear and concise with my explanation. So now that we know how to type something in, I know we didn't do a whole example, but we're going to keep this more moving along because I know we're on a time limit in a way. Well, I am actually, sorry about that. But we're going to explore the online book sales. Well, let's see. Let me connect to a network. Let's see. Yeah, so I was actually was trying to search for something, but you do get a search function mostly in certain books, and if you're in a text file, it will give you a search field so you could enter a phrase and get directly to that phrase of the text file. So let's explore a book, and I already have a book out, and I'm going to go into creating a bookmark and going to a bookmark. So I have a book that is called AI Generative for Dummies, I think is what it's called. Let me see. Right. Introduction to Generative AI. Okay. Introduction to Generative AI. Phrase will tell you, it will select the mode phrase. And if you press four and six to go left or right. I'm excited for this book. And it's reading the phrase, but I don't use that. I will show more on the way I use it. Line. And that's navigating by line. You could do that with left and right arrows, four and six. Sentence. And you can navigate by sentence for those that have other digital devices. There will be more know about these different features on how to read word by word, read by character, or read by sentence, or read by line when you're messing around with these screen readers or these devices. But I'm just gonna use that as an example. And for those that were with me in the beginning of this recording, or that are right here listening live with me, know that the J is number five. And we're gonna hit that one time. Now, I have it in a different mode that it will just say the letter that it's gonna put down. But the standard mode will say J. You press it again, it will say the letter. Press it again, it will say the next letter. Then you hear a little... And it verifies that it typed that letter. But I changed it because I use it pretty quick, the keypad. So let's do A. A. W. R. R. And I misspelled. And to delete that, I just hit the rewind button on the bottom left. And the right one will speak the whole phrase or title of the book, whatever you might be typing. So let's press that seven key four times for that S. S. And now I have...
