SCRIPTURES QUOTED (Acts 2:14 NKJV) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. (Acts 2:15 NKJV) For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. (Acts 2:16 NKJV) But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: (Acts 2:17 NKJV) 'AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS IN THE LAST DAYS, SAYS GOD, THAT I WILL POUR OUT OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL FLESH; YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS. (Acts 2:18 NKJV) AND ON MY MENSERVANTS AND ON MY MAIDSERVANTS I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT IN THOSE DAYS; AND THEY SHALL PROPHESY. (Acts 2:19 NKJV) I WILL SHOW WONDERS IN HEAVEN ABOVE AND SIGNS IN THE EARTH BENEATH: BLOOD AND FIRE AND VAPOR OF SMOKE. (Acts 2:20 NKJV) THE SUN SHALL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS, AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE COMING OF THE GREAT AND AWESOME DAY OF THE LORD. (Acts 2:21 NKJV) AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS THAT WHOEVER CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED.' (Mark 16:15 NKJV) And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:16 NKJV) He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. (Acts 2:22 NKJV) "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know— (Acts 2:23 NKJV) Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; (Acts 2:24 NKJV) whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. (Acts 2:25 NKJV) For David says concerning Him: 'I FORESAW THE LORD ALWAYS BEFORE MY FACE, FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, THAT I MAY NOT BE SHAKEN. (Acts 2:26 NKJV) THEREFORE MY HEART REJOICED, AND MY TONGUE WAS GLAD; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL REST IN HOPE. (Acts 2:27 NKJV) FOR YOU WILL NOT LEAVE MY SOUL IN HADES, NOR WILL YOU ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO SEE CORRUPTION. (Acts 2:28 NKJV) YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF JOY IN YOUR PRESENCE.' (Acts 2:29 NKJV) "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. (Acts 2:30 NKJV) Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, (Acts 2:31 NKJV) he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. (Acts 2:32 NKJV) This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. (Acts 2:33 NKJV) Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. (Acts 2:34 NKJV) "For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, (Acts 2:35 NKJV) TILL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES YOUR FOOTSTOOL." ' (Acts 2:36 NKJV) "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." (Mark 16:15 NKJV) And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:16 NKJV) He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:15 NKJV) And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:16 NKJV) He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. (Acts 2:37 NKJV) Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" (Acts 2:38 NKJV) Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:39 NKJV) For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call." (Ephesians 2:11 NKJV) Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh—who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands— (Ephesians 2:12 NKJV) that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. (Ephesians 2:13 NKJV) But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (Genesis 12:1 NKJV) Now the LORD had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you. (Genesis 12:2 NKJV) I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. (Genesis 12:3 NKJV) I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." (Acts 2:40 NKJV) And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." (Acts 2:41 NKJV) Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. (Acts 2:42 NKJV) And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. (Acts 2:43 NKJV) Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. (Acts 2:44 NKJV) Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, (Acts 2:45 NKJV) and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. (Acts 2:46 NKJV) So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, (Acts 2:47 NKJV) praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. (1 Corinthians 11:34 NKJV) But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set in order when I come. (1 Corinthians 11:22 NKJV) What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you. AI Generated Summary In this lesson on salvation, the importance of following the original teachings of Christ is emphasized. The pattern of teaching for salvation is the same in the first century as it is today. The pattern includes hearing the gospel, believing in God and Jesus, confessing Jesus as Lord, repenting of sins, being baptized for the forgiveness of sins, and being faithful to the Lord. Peter preaches the gospel on the day of Pentecost, proclaiming that Jesus was from God and performed miracles so that the people would believe. Jesus suffered a cruel, tortuous death but He was brought forth alive by God and then appeared to the apostles. Giving them the commands known as the Great Commission. A portion of Peter's 1st sermon following Jesus's commands given with the Great Commission. Joel's prophecy is quoted and Peter explains that what they see is the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy. A prophecy of David is quoted, showing that David was speaking about the Christ and not himself. This is the gospel message that leads to salvation. AI Generated Transcription. So good evening everybody, we continue our lesson tonight on salvation and understanding the pattern of teaching that men and women in the first century obeyed to become Christian. And this is so important because God's Word doesn't change. When you wake up tomorrow and look in your Bible, the words are going to be the same, the teachings are going to be the same, and Christ has let us know that he has all authority. So we got to hold fast to his original teachings that can't be changed. So the same pattern of teaching that was obeyed in the Bible for salvation, it's the same pattern of teaching that one has to obey today to become a part of Christ's kingdom. This is the only means by which your sins can be washed away. It's by obeying the teachings that Christ gave on how that he forgives sin and declares one righteous. And so we've been looking at the pattern of teaching that was taught by Christ and then the apostles, and then we stated that we would go and look at examples of conversion in the book of Acts, and that's where we begin tonight over in Acts chapter 2. And we're going to look at verses 14 through 41, and this is the day of Pentecost. After Christ had ascended into heaven, before his ascension, he had commissioned the apostles, which we read over last night, the commission of counts. When he commissioned them after he had risen from the dead, this final and great commission he gave them, he gave them the message to go out and teach and preach for salvation. And so we begin in Acts where we see the apostles take this gospel message of salvation to the world. And we're going to pay attention and look for the pattern. I want you to keep that word in your head tonight, pattern, because we're going to be learning pattern, pattern, pattern, every night for the next week or so. So the pattern that we learn from salvation in the Bible, we see that those who were saved, they hear the gospel message about Jesus Christ. They believe in God and in his son, Jesus. They confess that Jesus is Lord, that he's ruler of all. And they repent of their sins by making the firm decision within themselves to turn away from sin and turn to God. But not only that, they are baptized for the forgiveness of sins, and then they are faithful to the Lord. So let's look for this pattern throughout these conversions in the book of Acts. And we know that if you read one conversion, you may not see the whole pattern, but the more you read conversions in the book of Acts and put those conversions together, then you see the pattern and you understand the whole teaching that was taught for salvation. So let's begin with reading Acts chapter 2, verse 14. And I'll cut in and stop the reader when I need to. So Sylvia, go ahead and start. Yes, sir. All right. So here we see Peter on Pentecost Day after the apostles received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. When the kingdom arrived with power on earth, we see that the crowd, some reacted, and they called the apostles drunk. But Peter stood up with the 11, because it was 12 at this time. By Acts chapter 2, verse 14, they had to replace Judas, and they replaced Judas. And so it was 12 apostles. And so Peter stands up and he tells the crowd that these men are not drunk, sinning is but the third hour of the day. And this would have been the time of prayer for Jews. And so Peter goes on and gets ready to tell them that this is the fulfillment of prophecy that is taking place before your eyes. It was already foretold that Christ's kingdom would be established, and it would come in this manner in the last days. Okay? Now, Peter goes on and he begins to quote the prophecy of joy. So would our next reader go ahead and pick up with verse 17? Mary. Okay. And in the last days it shall be God declares that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and the suns on the earth below, blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. All right. So here Peter quotes Joel's prophecy. It was predicted that the kingdom would come and it would be established. It was predicted that Christ would pour out his spirit on Jews and Gentiles alike. That's what it means when it states all flesh. And within this prophecy it also is believed that it was mentioned about the fall of Jerusalem when it would come, when it stated that the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon and the blood before that great and notable day of the Lord comes. But then it goes on to state in verse 21, it states, And this shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Now this is a scripture that is misinterpreted by a lot of false teachers because they'll tell you, well, all you got to do is believe. The Bible says whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. You're right, which means there won't be no distinction between Jew or Gentile. But we got to understand what involves calling on the name of the Lord. And we're going to see it within this context. We're going to see that pattern of teaching that's obeyed. So for one, let's go check off hearing off the pattern list because they are already hearing the preaching. Peter has already stood up and started proclaiming the gospel. That's what Jesus told the apostles in Matthew chapter 16, verses 15 and 16. He told them to go ye out into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. But he who believes not shall be condemned. So Peter does just that. He goes and he stands up and publicly proclaims the gospel. And this is the first recorded gospel sermon after the ascension of Christ. And it is on Pentecost Day. And it is called the day of Pentecost because it came 50 days after Passover. And that's what Pentecost means, 50th. So here, if we pick up at verse 22, let's see is it the gospel that Peter continues to preach. Could our next reader begin at verse 22? Tim. Men of Israel, hear these words. Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst as you yourselves know. This Jesus delivered up. Hold on, Tim. So here at verse 22, we see that Peter proclaims that Jesus was from God. And even the Jews know that he was from God because the miracles proved it. Okay? That God had did by Jesus. Okay, Tim, continue with verse 23. This Jesus delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God. You crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosening the pain of death because it was not possible for him to be held by it. All right. So here, okay, so here we see Peter has told the Jews in verse 22 that Jesus was from God and y'all know he was from God. It was proven by the miracles that he did in your midst. But then he reads them a stern indictment. He basically calls them murderers in verse 23. Now he gives a bold statement. He tells them him being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God. Now y'all remember over in 1 Peter where we was talking about the foreknowledge of God, how that God before one day of creation ever came to exist, he had already planned that everyone who would serve him would be in Christ because he knew the fall of man would take place because he had foreknowledge to see into the future. So for Christ to be delivered up and crucified was God's plan. It was God-elected plan to secure our redemption. They could not have crucified him if it wasn't God's plan. So Peter tells them it was God's plan that y'all crucified Jesus, but y'all are murderers. Y'all murdered the Christ. Y'all are the ones responsible for murdering God's son. But then Peter goes on to tell them that God raised up Christ from the dead because it was not possible that death should hold Christ. So here we just see it was talked about the death and the resurrection of Christ. So what is that? It's the gospel. Because remember, the gospel led to death, the burial, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. So anytime I see in the scriptures where it mentions Christ's death, his burial, or his resurrection, I know one thing I need to stop and tell myself. This is the gospel. This is the gospel. And this is what we got to follow from A to Z. So then we get to verse 25, and Peter begins to quote another process that was quoted by King David. And could our next reader begin with verse 25? Yes, sugar. King David said this about him. I see the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad and my tongue shouts him praises. My body rests in hope for you will not leave me. You will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave. You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with joy of your presence. All right. So here Peter quotes prophecy from David from the book of Psalms. All right. And we see that Peter, he quotes the prophecy of David, but David was prophesying about Christ. What the Jews didn't know. So Peter tells them, for David's speaker concerning him, that is Christ, he stated, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved. Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad. Moreover, also my flesh should rest in hope, because thou would not leave my soul in Hades, neither would thou suffer thine Holy One to seek corruption. So we understand that it was already prophesied that Jesus would be risen from the dead and that his body would not even be in the grave and decay long enough to decay, because God would raise him up. So we understand that when Christ rose from the dead, but not only when he rose from the dead, when he was crucified and he was buried, it was all to fulfill prophecy. It was God's elective plan to secure our redemption from sin. Okay. And then in verse 29, Peter makes it plain to his recipients, these Jews who are all present on Pentecost, he tells them, men and brethren, he calls them brethren because they are Jews, and he tells them, let me freely speak. You have one minute remaining. He tells them, men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his scepter is with us unto this day. So he tells them, look, let me just let y'all know about King David, who y'all hold in honor. Look, we all know that David is dead and buried, and his tomb is among us even to this day. David's still in the ground. So what our next reader pick up and continue to read. Pat, starting at 230. Thank you for using global telling. Okay. Therefore, being a prophet and knowing that God has sworn with an oath to him, that is of the fruit of his body, according to the pledge, he would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne. He, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that his soul was not left in Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Therefore, being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he poured out this, which you now see and hear. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself, the Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool. Therefore, let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said to them. All right. Let's start right there. So here we see that Peter breaks down to them that David was not prophesying about what was going to happen to himself. He was not stating that God would raise him from the dead, because of course we know that David was just a man. But David was a prophet who knew by the Spirit that God would raise up Christ. But also God made a promise to David that he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne. Okay? And so he's saying this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in Hades. Maybe his flesh did see corruption. And then Peter goes on to state in verse 32, this Jesus have God raised up whereof we are all witnesses. So he's talking about himself and the other apostles, that they are all witnesses of Christ's resurrection. They know for certain that the same man that was crucified, that was buried, is the same Jesus who God raised from the dead. And they publicly proclaim this at the sakes and cause of their own life. So why would they go this far to preach a lie to the point of even being put to death? So then Peter goes on in verse 33, he states, therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, he's talking about what Christ is, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this which ye now see and hear. So Peter tells them, look, me and the other 11 apostles are not drunk as y'all suppose. This is the promise that Jesus has sent back on us apostles. We were baptized with the Holy Ghost just as he promised us we would be. Not all the disciples on Pentecost Day was baptized with the Holy Ghost, but only the apostles. Okay? And Peter lets them know that Jesus is exalted, the same one you have crucified, the same one that was prophesied that he would be risen from the dead and seated at God's right hand. God hath did just that. He has fulfilled promise, and Jesus has sent back the promise of the Holy Ghost on us apostles. And this is why y'all have heard us apostles speak in your own languages that we had never before learned. Okay? So verse 34 states, For David is not ascended into the heavens, but he said to himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, until I make thy foes thy footstool. And then Peter goes on in verse 36 and 37, and 36 it states, Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredness that God hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. So here I want to ask, what did Peter just preach to these Jews on Pentecost? What is that called? Well, that is called the gospel. That is exactly what they was commissioned to go out and preach. In Mark chapter 16, verses 15 and 16. So here we see that have the Jews heard, did they hear? Because we went across many teachings on salvation that stated that they hear the gospel message about God and his son. But we also understand that they have to believe in God and in his son Jesus Christ. They have to confess that Jesus Lord, he's ruler of all. They have to repent, making the firm decision within themselves to turn away from sin and turn to God. But they also have to be baptized for the remission of sins in order to receive salvation. They have to be faithful unto them. Okay, so as we pick up at verses 37 and 38, I want our next reader to read that for us. Acts chapter 2, verses 37 and 38. Ty, read next. I lost my list. Peter's words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, Brothers, what shall we do? Peter replied, each of you must repent of your sin and turn to God and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. So here we can check hearing, believing, and confession, and repentance. Let me break it down for you. So they heard. We know they heard because Peter has just proclaimed the gospel. And now that they heard it, they believed and confessed. How can we tell? Because if you look at verse 37, there's a confirmation of belief and confession. And repentance. Because once they understood that they was guilty and they was in sin, they was guilty of the murder of God's son, they was repentant about their sins. They wanted to know what did they need to do to be declared righteous with God. But they not only showed repentance, but they showed that they believed about their statement of confession. It states, now when they heard this, they were pricked in their hearts, which means that they believed that they was guilty of the murder of Christ. And they said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do? That is a statement of belief and confession. What shall we do? If you tell me that, Charles, you guilty of such and such, and I say, what shall I do? This means I believe you. And I just told you I believe you. And I want to know what I need to do to fix it. So we see that they hear, believe, confess, but they also repent. Because in verse 38, it states, then Peter said unto them, repent. See, more of the pattern has started to emerge within this conversion. Peter said, repent and be baptized. Why? Because you've got to do it all. You can't just do one. You've got to repent and be baptized for the remission of sins. And Peter says, repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, which means you've got to be baptized, because this is what Christ authorized for the forgiveness of sins. You all obey in Christ's command. And baptism is for the remission of sins, as Peter states in verse 38. But then he goes on to say, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. So here in verse 38, it states that the Holy Ghost has something to offer, and that is the gift. So the gift that the Holy Ghost offers is salvation, because if we look at verse 39, it states, So the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. So the promise is unto the Jews and their children and even to the Gentiles who have always been labored afar off from God and without the one and only true God in the world. So let's pay attention to this afar off really quick, just a quick glimpse. I want you all to turn to Ephesians chapter 2, and I want to read verses 11 through 13. And it states, go ahead, Ms. Sylvia. Therefore, remember that formerly you, the gifts of human flesh, who are called uncircumcised by the so-called circumcision, is performed in the flesh by human hands. Remember that you were and are separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenant of promise, with no hope without God in the world. But now, in Christ Jesus, you who formerly, afar off, have been brought near by the blood of Christ. So here Paul tells the Gentiles that y'all at first were strangers and aliens to God's people and to the covenant, to the promises that was made to the fathers. Y'all was without the one and only true God in the world. Y'all worshiped idols and things that you made with your hands. He say, but now, in Christ Jesus, only by being in Christ, ye who were sometimes were afar off. See that far off is very important. That refers to the Gentiles. They say, but they have been made nigh by the blood of Christ. So who is you to tell me that I don't have to be washed in the blood of Christ in order to be forgiven of my sins? See, once I understand the pattern of preaching that the New Testament teaches, I understand that that is false. Okay? That I must understand that I have to be baptized for the remission of sins, or I won't receive the gift that the Holy Ghost offers, which is salvation. But one more second. Let's flip over to Genesis chapter 12, and let's read verses 1 through 3, so we can understand the promise, because many promises was made to the Jews, but the main promise centered on Genesis chapter 12, verses 1 through 3. Mary? Okay. Now the Lord said to Abram, go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you, and I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of your earth shall be blessed. Now there's many promises that was made to Abraham within this context, but the main one that we focus on is at the end of verse 3 when God stated that, and he shall all families of the earth be blessed. And this is the same blessing that Abraham passed on to Isaac, and Isaac passed it on to Jacob, and then you had this great nation that come out from Jacob, 12 sons, who became the great nation of Israel who Moses led out of Egypt. With all this, God kept the Jews intact as a nation so that his son could be born through their lineage. Why? So that he can keep his promise to Abraham that all families of the earth will be blessed in Christ. So who is you to tell me that I don't have to obey this pattern of teaching in the New Testament, which is the only means by which I can get to Christ? If I don't hear, believe, confess, repent, and be baptized for the remission of sins, then I can't be a part of the promise. I can't receive the gift that the Holy Ghost offers, and that is salvation. So let's continue on with Acts chapter 2, verse 40. And with many other words, he testified and exhorted them, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation. All right, so here we see that it states that with many other words that he testified and exhorted, saying, Save yourselves from this crooked generation. So this ain't even everything that Peter stated on Pentecost Day, but God has preserved for us in the Scriptures what we need to know to be saved. Okay? He has preserved for us what we need to know, because he has ordered them with many other words, just like I get on the phone and I teach and I preach the gospel, but I give many other words of encouragement while we need to, you know, obey the gospel. So with many other words that Peter exhorted, telling them, Look, save yourselves from this crooked generation. And we as Christians, once we have thoroughly learned the New Testament gospel, we have found the treasure, and we need to go bury that treasure in the hearts of others, exhorting them, telling them, Look, save yourselves from this crooked generation. But let's pay attention to verse 41. Where's verse 41 stated? Then those who gladly received his word were baptized, and that day about 3,000 souls were added to them. All right, so here we see that not all the Jews prisoned on Pentecost obeyed the gospel. Though they heard it, they didn't obey. They say, Then they that gladly received his word were baptized. Okay? Those who gladly received his word were baptized, which lets us know that they heard, they believed, they confessed, they repented, and they also understood that they need to be baptized for the remission of sin. And what happened with those who was baptized, they was added unto the apostles' number. They was added to the Lord's kingdom. You don't see denominations. Denominations was foreign to these people. They didn't know anything about denominations. They weren't split. They weren't divided. They was as one because they understood the unity that Christ talked about and that he preached about this one kingdom and this church that he would build. So that day the Lord added unto them about 3,000 souls. That's a whole lot of baptized. That's a great number. But if you really look at all the amount of people that was present, there wasn't enough. It was sad that only 3,000, about 3,000 souls were saved. And then verse 42 states, And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine. The word doctrine means teaching. Remember the Great Commission in Matthew chapter 28 when Jesus told the apostles, Go out and make disciples, baptizing them, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you. And it stated there, And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship and in breaking of bread and in prayer. That's everything that consists of worship. So they worshiped with the apostles because they understood about the one kingdom, the one church that the Lord established. Then it states, And fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. This is how you know that only the apostles was baptized with the Holy Ghost on Pentecost. They was the only one that received that power to do wonders and signs just as Jesus had done. And then verse 44 states, And all that believed were together and had all things common. And so their possessions and goods imparted them to all men as every man had need. Now let's stop now because it don't mean that just because when you become a Christian that you've got to sell your possessions and divide them apart. Everybody knows it's not what they teach. We've got to think back to the first century time. This was Pentecost Day. You had Jews that came from every nation all over the world to Jerusalem on Pentecost. And some of them probably remained in Jerusalem once the church was established. So they have left homes and houses and everything behind. So there was a need to show generosity and benevolence to the saints. And even today there's needs to be generous and show benevolence to the saints. Not just to the saints, but on our own behalf we can show generosity and benevolence to sinners and strangers as well when we have opportunity. But let's pay attention to verse 46 because in verse 46 we have a totally different breaking of bread from the breaking of bread in verse 42. The breaking of bread in verse 42 refers to worship whereas the breaking of bread in verse 46 refers to what they did in common meals from the temple and house to house. And, yes, even though Christ was crucified and he had risen and ascended to heaven, it was still the Jews' customs to go to the temple. It was their customs. And this is where the most religious people could be found, where they would already have a better chance to understand the gospel about Christ once they teach him, they have a better chance to be converted. So, of course, they continued to go to the temple. But it states in verse 46, And they continued when daily was one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, see, this breaking of bread was done from house to house, just like the Lord's Supper. And it states, they did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart. In verse 47 it states, They praise in God and have in favor with all the people. And the Lord adds to the church daily, such as should be said. So the Lord is the one that adds us to his church once we obey this pattern of teaching. Thank you for using Global Telling. If we look at 1 Corinthians 11 and see what Charles was talking about there and referred to and affirmed in 1 Corinthians 11, if we just pick up 1 Corinthians 11, verse 34. Mary, would you read that, 1 Corinthians 11, verse 34? Yes, I can read that. So, Paul has been teaching them about the proper way to take the Lord's Supper. And he draws a distinction. The Lord's Supper is not meant to fill our stomachs, satisfy our physical hunger. It's mainly a spiritual meal to remember the body and blood of Jesus, look forward to himself, this coming again, to examine ourselves. So we see the distinction between the two. And we can see that here, this passage, and that proper place to eat our physical meals, the ones to satisfy our hunger, is not as we come together as a church, but privately. 1 Corinthians 11, verse 22, also says the same thing. In case you didn't understand that one. Tim, would you read 1 Corinthians 11, verse 22? Okay. 11, verse 22? Yes. Okay. Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you. Okay. So, we read this entire context here. We can see that the Lord's Supper is indeed a special occasion to be taken out when there's a coming together, like he was talking about in the temple earlier. See that's where it says. Charles, you back on? Yes, sir. I'm here. Okay. You go ahead, sir. All right. So we see the pattern emerges that Jesus taught for salvation in all the scriptures that we looked over on salvation. And once we put them together, we see what was taught for salvation. We read the commission accounts, and we understand the message that Jesus told the apostles to go out and preach. And we understand that they hear, believe, confess, repent, and be baptized for the remission of sins. Then they're saved. The Lord adds them to his church. So within this one account, the first account that we've looked over in Acts 2 tonight, verses 14 through 41, we see that they heard, they believed, they confessed, they repented, then they was baptized for the remission of sins, and they were saved. Because as we read down to verse 47, it says that the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. And we just really want to pay attention to pattern, pattern, pattern, pattern, to see the pattern emerge out of every conversion that we go through.
