The Basis Of Morality

"The Basis of Morality" is an essay written by Arthur Schopenhauer in 1840 as a response to a question posed by the Danish Royal Society of Sciences. Schopenhauer criticizes the prevailing Western theory of morality, particularly championed by Immanuel Kant, and presents his own insights. He argues that the foundation of morality lies in compassion, which he considers the cardinal virtue. Schopenhauer supports his argument with thought experiments and draws connections between his conclusion and the ancient wisdom found in the Vedas and Upanishads.
