Priscila Castro migrated to the U.S. with her mother in 2000 for better opportunities. Many families migrated during this time due to community violence and education reasons. Priscila experienced culture shock when she arrived. The impact of migrating students on education is significant, with 9.7 million school-aged children from immigrant families in the U.S. Indiana had an estimated Hispanic Latino population of 2,242,610 in 2002. Here in my living room sits Priscila Castro, someone who can speak on her experience of traveling here when she was a young child. Hello Priscila, thank you for being here. Now that we know a bit about Priscila's background, I want to ask you Priscila, if you remember anything about when you first came to the U.S.? Priscila migrated with her mother in the year 2000 to Evansville, Indiana. When I researched the number of immigrants coming to the United States, I was especially looking for numbers of children. According to a research article, a Mexican Family Life Survey tracked 854 migrates, including 375 children coming to the United States from 2000 to 2005. During this time, the increase in migrates had just increased. Most families migrated for better opportunities and to keep their families safe. In this research article, it states the reason for migrating was in response to community violence and education. In Priscila's case, it was for the economy and new opportunities. You said you were 9 or 10. How was the culture shock arriving? This statement in particular was interesting to me. I had been an ESL student and I would not have survived without it. I did a bit of research regarding the impact of migrating students made the impact of education. This statement in particular was interesting to me. I had been an ESL student my entire life and without it, I had not... This statement in particular was interesting. I had been an ESL student growing up and I would not have survived without it. I had been an ESL student growing up and I would not have survived without it. I did a bit of research regarding the impact of migrating students on education. According to a report that speaks on the downsides of immigration states, in 2002, there were 9.7 million school-aged children from immigrant families in the United States. It's not to say all of these 9.7 million migrants were from Mexico, but we know they played part of these numbers. I decided to dig deeper and find information on migrates in Indiana, the same state Priscilla lived in. A report briefed by the Indiana Commission on Hispanic Latino Affairs stated the estimated Hispanic Latino population in Indiana was 2,242,610 on July 1st, 2002.
