Wine of the Gauls

In the 6th century, the Bretons frequently made incursions into the territory of their neighbors—who were under Frankish rule and whom they referred to by the generic term "Gauls." While these expeditions were most often motivated by the need to defend their independence, they were sometimes driven by a desire to obtain goods from the enemy that were in short supply in Brittany—foremost among them, wine (Hersart de la Villemarqué: *Barzaz Breiz*, 1867).
