Children use social media to express their mental health struggles, so it's crucial for parents to be aware and have discussions. The FBI has training videos on child trafficking, and Florida's Attorney General, Ashley Moody, has a website with resources on child safety. It is our responsibility as parents, educators, and mentors to look into the device controls that are available to set age-appropriate restrictions, keeping in mind that those restrictions need to lighten up as they age so we can create autonomous adults who can think for themselves about actions and consequences. When talking about social media in particular, the more eyes that you trust on the content, the better. I always ask my sister and close friends to accept friend requests from my children so they can see any posts that may be concerning. Children and adolescents use social media as a communication platform to state mental health status and trials they are facing. When I see these posts or someone points them out to me, it gives me the opportunity to have a discussion with my child about their thoughts. It really takes all of us working together to keep our kids safe. It takes a village to raise a family.
