The Lafayette Museum Historic Home and Gardens was the residence of several important families including the Moutons, Mills, and Girards. Jean Mouton, founder of Vermilionville, built a small structure called the Maison du Manche on the property for his family to use when traveling to church. The Moutons also donated land for the church and city hall, which led to the growth of Vermilionville. Welcome to the Lafayette Museum Historic Home and Gardens. The house served as the residence of several prominent families. Three of these families, the Moutons, the Mills, and the Girards, made major additions to the house and contributed greatly to the growth of the town. Jean Mouton, the founder of Vermilionville, built a small structure on the property called the Maison du Manche, or Sunday House. It was used when the family traveled from their home near Caring Crow to attend church services. Mr. Mouton donated land for the church and city hall, around which the village of Vermilionville grew.
