Dengue fever, caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito bite, is a viral infection. The infected mosquito needs human blood to produce eggs. Dengue has two forms: mild and severe. There is no specific treatment for dengue, but symptoms can be managed with pain relievers, rest, and clean water. To prevent dengue, avoid mosquito bites, reduce mosquito population, and use mosquito repellent. Marcella, a mother of three, lived in an area with poor waste management and was constantly exposed to mosquito bites. Her children were admitted to the hospital with dengue symptoms. She learned the importance of waste management and protection. Welcome to another health episode. I am Abigail, your host. Our health topic for today is dengue fever. We will learn how to promote dengue fever-free homes in our communities. Dengue, also known as dandy or break bone fever, is a viral infection. It is caused by a mosquito called Aedes aegypti bite. The infected female Aedes aegypti bite transmits the dengue virus to humans. The female infected Aedes aegypti mosquito has been an enemy to humans. Why? Because the infected female Aedes aegypti mosquito needs the protein in humans and animal blood to produce eggs. They tend to inhabit overpopulated urban areas with poor waste management. They love to live indoors too. They live longer than their male counterparts. Two forms of dengue. The mild dengue fever causes a high fever and flu-like symptoms. Most people recover within a week or so. The severe form, called dengue hemorrhagic fever, shows the following signs. Severe stomach pain. Persistent vomiting. Bleeding nose and gums. Blood in stools. Urine and vomit. Breathing difficulties. Restless. And fatigue. What would be the best treatment for dengue? There is no specific treatment for dengue. However, the focus is on treating pain symptoms with the use of pain relievers, intake of clean water, enough sleep, and a visit to the hospital. The best way to prevent dengue fever is to avoid being bitten by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Reduce the mosquito population. And our call for action is use mosquito repellent. Reduce mosquito inhabitants. Stay in well-screened houses. We have a story here from Marcella. And the title of the story is Aedes aegypti mosquito, an enemy to humans. Marcella is a mother of three boys who lives with her children in a community that is located in the tropical region, which is a favorable condition for the natural habitat of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Unfortunately, the waste management in her neighborhood is poor, and the same goes for her household. She believes that the local government has to hire more people to keep the neighborhood clean. Marcella and her children were constantly exposed to the Aedes aegypti mosquito bites, which she claims is a normal part of life. Occasionally, she and her children drink local concoctions when their fever becomes severe. She has been advised by her neighbors to receive the dengue fever vaccine with her children, but she refused. During the summer season, she and her children stay outside longer. This exposed them more to the mosquito bites. Now, her children were admitted with high fever and stomach pain. The child Marcella learned the hard truth. She had understood that waste management is her responsibility. Likewise, draining stagnant water and wearing protective clothing. She joined us this week on the Dengue Fever Podcast.
