Walking with God is a common phrase used in the Bible, but what does it actually mean and how can we apply it to our lives? Enoch is an example of someone who walked with God so closely that God took him. Hebrews 11 highlights Enoch's pleasing faith in God. Some believe Enoch was perfect, while others emphasize his faith. Other biblical figures like Noah, Abraham, and Moses also walked faithfully with God. Walking with God means walking by faith, trusting Him even when we don't have all the answers. It involves a close and intimate relationship with God, being obedient to His will, and experiencing His presence and guidance in our lives.
Welcome to everyone that's here. There's quite a few people tonight, and we appreciate you joining promptly. Praise God. Tonight's study, let's talk about this walking with God. It's a word that's used, and it's common in the Bible. But what is it talking about, and how does it become practical to my life? How do I walk with God? Let's pray. Father, tonight, as we come before you, and we're seeking you, God, not just seeking to be impressive, or seeking to have a super knowledge of Scripture, but God, we're seeking to know you, to walk with you.
Father, we desire that you would use our lives, and God, the more we walk with you in carefulness, God, that you're able, that you're able to work through us. So, Father, we're asking you to guide us tonight, and keep us on the track of your word and your will for this night, the rhema for us, the fresh bread for us tonight, God. We're asking to guide our life. We pray in the wonderful name of Jesus. Amen.
Easily the first examples that come to mind in the Old Testament is the life of Enoch. And it says that Enoch, for 300 years, for 300 years, Enoch walked with God. And then he was not, because God took him. So, this is one example of someone who walked with God. He walked with God in such a way that all that Scripture records of him is in two different places. And the amazing thing about it is those who walk, that the way he walked with God so closely, it says in Genesis 5, 24, Enoch walked faithfully with God.
Then he was no more, because God took him. God took him away. Brother L.A., can you read Hebrews 11, 5? It has a comment on Enoch. Brother L.A., can you read there in Hebrews 11, verse 5? Yeah, go ahead, David. By faith, Enoch was translated that he should not see death, and was not found, because God has translated him. But because his translation, he had this testimony that he pleased God. So, before he was translated, he had this testimony.
And the testimony was that he was found pleasing, pleasing to God. David, what would you say that Hebrews 11 adds to our understanding of Enoch? What does it add to your understanding? Enoch walked with God, and his ways, Enoch's ways, pleased God. His ways, okay. And Enoch walked in communion with God. He was first to be translated by God, that is, he did not see death. Enoch was so perfect in his dealing with God. That was why God translated him.
That was, I can say that God immortalized Enoch. Immortalized him. Yes, he immortalized him because Enoch was so perfect. I don't think there is anybody in the Bible, apart from Jesus, that was likened to Enoch when it comes to dealing with God. So, apart from Jesus, he was the only perfect person. So, you think he was perfect? Yes, Enoch was perfect. I think Enoch was perfect. Okay. So, that was why God translated him. Interesting. Anyone else with a comment on that Hebrews and this man, Enoch, that walked with God? David feels like he was a perfect man from that time.
It's interesting because in Genesis 5, it says, after the birth of his son, Methuselah, Enoch lived 300 more years. And Enoch walked faithfully with God. So, we really don't know what his life was like completely before. Does that mean that his life was a little different before Methuselah, the man who lived the longest, and died the year of the flood? Or either in the flood or just before. We suspect just before. For 300 years. Anyone else have a comment on this Enoch? Go ahead, brother Xavier.
What would you add to that? I will make just a brief comment. Okay. I don't think Enoch was a perfect man. Because when we read the whole chapter, it talks about one of the main qualities, if not the main quality, in every believer that pleases God. Because we see from verse 2, they are elders who obtained a good report because of faith. Then the same faith makes us today understand the work of God. Then the first person to be talked about is Abel.
He, by faith, offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice. Then, secondly, we see Enoch was translated by faith because he pleased God. And then in verse 6, it is written that without faith, it is impossible to please God. So I think the main ingredient of Enoch's life was faith. And since it is faith that pleases God, Enoch had this addition of working with God by faith and faithfully for so long. I think this is where the translation comes in.
Because the Bible says that just shall live by faith. And this Enoch, the Bible is proving to us, just by faith, he worked with God. Okay. But the Savior's take on this is that it was Enoch's faith in God that was so pleasing to God. And that's what is being highlighted in Hebrews. Well, the Bible doesn't say clearly. We can each have our own take on it. And I think that's acceptable. But like a standard, did you want to add something to that one? I must have missed that.
Hello, Daddy, I must have missed that on that point. Okay. Well, what the discussion right now is on Enoch himself. And there's two places that we find Enoch. Genesis 5 and also Hebrews 11. And Pastor David's of the opinion that this man, Enoch, was perfect and perfectly walked with God faithfully and perfectly. And the Savior takes more of, you know, he was a very good man. But it was his faith which was pleasing to God, which is highlighted in Hebrews 11.
Oh, okay. That's where we're at with that. All right. For me, I go with what the late Reverend Kenneth Hagin said of him. The Bible says Enoch walked with God and he was not for God to kill. So my view is that Enoch had what I would call a consistent fellowship with God. Such that a point came when, as he continued to spend time with the Lord, he didn't come back again. That's how it happened. So he would go be with the Lord, go be with the Lord.
And one time he went and never came back. Because in my experience, I know that one who grows so much in fellowship with God, that it takes one to certain dimensions. Sometimes you have to say, oh God, I can't bear this. The flesh will not be able to bear the impact of the spiritual. Cannot bear the anointing and the grace that comes along with that fellowship. So Kenneth Hagin was of the view that probably one of the times in the course of fellowship he had to go be with the Lord.
Because it's not possible to sustain that blessedness with this body and flesh. That's what I think of Enoch. But more so, the Bible tells us in Jude that Enoch prophesied. So there are many things about Enoch. Enoch prophesied that the Lord is coming with thousands and thousands of his sons. Something like that in Jude. It's a reference to Enoch. That's right. So Enoch shows us to be a man who was fruitful in many respects. He prophesied about the future.
He walked with God. I think he lived such a fruitful Christian life. I will not want to say maybe this, that, that. But I know that if there is anything I can agree. I believe Enoch had such consistent walk with God. He was faithful. Faithful in what God had called him to do. Faithful in his personal devotion to God. So that his life became so fruitful. And the Lord will not have him remain on this earth.
There's an old story that said, well, God and Enoch were walking as they often did. And one day they walked together so long. God said, well, you're closer to my house than yours. Why don't you just come with me tonight? I love that. I know you've probably heard it before. But here's the question that, you know, we can discuss these people. There's examples how Moses is claimed to have walked with God in his life. Abraham and others are excellent examples.
And the Bible gives us those examples. Noah. It says about Noah in Genesis 6, the next chapter. It says this is the account of Noah and his family. That Noah was a righteous man. And he was blameless among the people of his time. And he walked faithfully. Again, this word faithfully and walked are together. The same as it was with Enoch. He walked faithfully with God. Abraham in Genesis 24. 40 here. He said to me. This is Genesis 24.
40. He said to me, the Lord before whom I have walked. The Lord before whom I have walked will send his angel with you and make your journey a success. And you will take a wife from my son, from my family, and from my father's household. So Abraham claimed to have walked faithfully before God. Another one is Moses. It's a different example because Moses pleaded with God. And God says, I'm going to send my angel. And I'm not going with you unless I get angry and destroy this people.
And Moses said, remember we studied this. If you don't go with us, we're going nowhere. And then the Lord replied in Exodus 33. He said, my presence will go with you. And I will give you rest. And Moses said, if you don't go with us. If your presence don't go with us, carry us not hence. Don't take us there. So that's an example of somebody. It doesn't say the words. But it's such an example of somebody who did walk closely with God.
So let's jump into what does it mean to walk with God. We've had some offerings, suggestions already of what it might mean. But let's open up and see how would you define what defines walking with God. We touched on it maybe already. But let's offer, Emmanuel, would you care to offer a meaning to you? What do you mean walking with God? Praise God. I really was enlightened from the comments and the contribution that people made about Enoch.
And I was thinking, I didn't even know you were going to ask this question. So to me, I would say walking with God means walking by faith. Just like Enoch and Abraham did. They just trusted him wholly, even when they did not have the whole picture clear. For me, I think that is one of the major reasons that Enoch and our Lord's relationship was so unique. And it was counted for him for righteousness because he just walked with the Lord with faith.
Just trusted him. So going back to your question, to answer what it means or what I see as walking with the Lord. I'll put it this way. Walking with the Lord means you walking by faith. That is what walking with the Lord means. Yes, praise God. Yes, thank you for an excellent contribution, Emmanuel. I appreciate it. Brother Saviour, I'm certain that you would have some comment on what does it mean walking with God. What does it mean walking with God? Walking with God, personally, I believe it is having fellowship, intimate fellowship with God.
That's it. Okay. Brother L.A., do you walk with God? Brother L.A., what is your definition? What is it? How do you measure? What is this, walking with God? Okay, my measurement of my ethic, walking with God, is obedience. Because the account of Abraham, obedience to God's command, to God's will, contributed greatly to him being a friend of God. He was seen or considered as one who walked with God. Same as Noah. And then I think that obedience is one important element in anyone that is seen as a righteous person.
Because most of your dealings with God is God will always tell you what to do and place certain demands on you. So you are being able to do what God wants, do what He says, where He wants you to be, you are there. And at the time He wants you to, I think that way you are walking closely with God. So I think obedience is one of the things that makes me say that this man, this woman, walks with God.
Because God will always place demands on you. And then for most of these men, the demands may be consecration demands. Because in the life of John the Baptist, his food was wild honey. He didn't eat stuff every other person ate. Although the Bible may not have broken it down for everybody, for Enoch and all of that, but it was something they did that every other person wasn't doing. So that way, and they did it for God, so that way this man walked with God.
So that's my understanding. That bears out in the New Testament, it can be corroborated in the New Testament. Jesus says, if you love me, keep my commandments. It says in another one, He it is that loveth me. He that walks according to my words. So you can definitely find scripture in the New Testament to agree with you, Ellie. Anybody else you wanted to add to this definition? We have faith, we have personal fellowship with God, and we have the measure of this walk with God is our obedience.
Because He is God and we're following Him. Brother Xavier, you have your microphone open. Did you want to add something? I would like to add that this fellowship is not a one day business. It must be a continual fellowship. So we're going to add personal fellowship and we're going to add continual. Because when we read the book of Enoch, it says he walked faithfully. He walked faithfully with God. And that implies 300 years. That's a long time.
Those 300 years he faithfully walked with God. You know, a couple of weeks ago we were talking about, Cassandra, you were catching it. The one from Habakkuk 3.19. And it says, you've made my feet like hind feet and made me to walk upon my high places. And then the one, yeah. And Brother Cassandra, also the one that says, thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. And we began to understand that throughout the word of God, these feet and this path talks about our choice and decisions, how we stand firmly, how we move forward.
And really the meaning of my feet is my decisions in life, how I set myself and what I decide, how I will be obedient or not be obedient, how I will go my own way or I will go God's way. Those are choices made by our will. So steps in the Old Testament and New Testament often speak of our decisions and our firm stands throughout our life to seek God, to obey God, to pursue him and to pursue his will.
Many times we don't even ask for his will. Many times. What does it say in Psalms? And we see it many times, 3, 5, trust in the Lord with all of your heart. Lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your path. Well, there's that word path and feet again. So it gives very clear instructions how to have our path pleasing to the Lord and directed by the Lord.
Trust, lean not on our own understanding, and in everything acknowledge him. Elder Cassander, what does it mean? In all thy ways acknowledge him. That's a powerful one. What is my ways? What are my ways? What is it talking about? When scripture, I believe that when scripture says, in all your ways acknowledge him, it's talking about every aspect of your life, everything, your marriage, your finances, everything, where you live, what career path you take, how your ministry will go.
That's what it means. I used to share an example because about two Sundays ago, was it last Sunday or two Sundays ago, we had this as our text in Sunday school. And I told them, while I was a student in the university, we once had reasons to move to another apartment because where we lived had power issues. There was no power supply for months. And that was our final year in school where we have a lot of projects.
So let me just cut it short. Anyway, we found another apartment and they had been having constant power supply and wanted to park in as soon as possible. But on the way, after we checked out the room, my roommate said, Cass, let's pray about this decision. So we had hands and prayers. And we perceived that the Lord will not have us move. But we obeyed, even though physically we didn't know why, because the reason for moving was power supply.
And this place has power supply. What happened is what I will never forget. It's been how many years now? About 10 years now. 13 years now. Anyway, what happened? In one week's time, Daddy, I'm telling you the truth. That power supply, which even consisted of network that had been destroyed because there was a storm that caused that disturbance of the power supply issues. These power lines were fixed within one week. And power was restored to the place we wanted to park from.
Then, the place we were parking to, their distribution transformers were packed up. I will never forget that in my life. Wow. So the Lord knew the future. And that's how we would have practically moved from darkness into, sorry, from light into darkness. Just because we didn't know the future ourselves. So, that little decision, it's a decision that people can make, you know, without consulting God. And, after all, just relocate, because it's not, it's a walk. It's a stone's throw from our house, the place we're going to.
But they have power. But the Lord will not have us go. He just perceives. We are not going to pay for that room. And suddenly, within one week, the tables were turned. Their distribution transformers were packed up. So, if I will trust in the Lord, and acknowledge him, the Bible says, acknowledge him in all your ways. The word acknowledge is an interesting word. If I acknowledge you daddy, I recognize you. Is that not so? Yes. I respect you.
Assuming you were in a room, to show my acknowledgement of you, is as I come in, I greet. I say, excuse me dad, that's acknowledgement. So when the Lord, when the Bible says, acknowledge him in all your ways, before I make a step, if I truly acknowledge the Lord, I should tell God about it. Ask him about it. I will not have gone all the way to Lagos. Then I start saying, Lord, what do you think about my coming to Lagos? No, I don't acknowledge the Lord, if I do that.
So, every simple decision, relocation, career, where to live, well, what to pay for, what to use my money to do. These are very important decisions. Personally, it's one area I've been saying, Lord, I think I need you here. Because, it is the Lord that knows, what money that came, what it is for. Yes. You may even use it for a noble purpose. But it was not what it was for. Right. Your idea. Yes, yes. So that's what I believe.
That's beautiful, how you, how you explained it with that story, to acknowledge. Yeah, I think the opposite is to ignore, and disobey. Ignore. To disrespect. Yeah. So, from the time I was young, I began this practice, before it was required of me, it was on my own. I, I began with whatever money I had, in my pocket, or in my account. I began to seek the Lord, before doing anything. Even before, if I wanted to, I had the money, and I was hungry, I wanted to buy the food, I would seek the Lord, about what should I do, how should I do.
And, I watched God, take the little that I had, and begin to increase. You know, in the book of Obadiah, he says, the Lord begins to blow on, whatever they had. And then it would, gather up barns, and try to increase, and the Lord would simply blow on it. And it would become, as it says, dust, and blow away. And that's the opposite of what, when God will, bless someone, and bless the worker, my hands, who will bless my coming in, and bless my going out.
There's a difference, when we acknowledge God, and we walk with Him, as He begins, He begins, He's capable of, blessing us, and causing an increase, rather than, scattering. And I believe, it begins with a surrender, and a consecration, of all that we have, to the Lord. So, I've experienced, from when I was young, that God began to, increase, and bless, cause me to have, more wisdom, in managing, what I have. You know, there's a, there's a, there's a mentality, that people have.
You know, in America, the people who spend, the most money on, fast food, and pizza, are the poor. It's crazy, but the most, amount of money spent, and in such, they remain poor, because they never, they never learn, to acknowledge God, and to learn wisdom, and learn obedience. Amos 3.3 What does it say? The book of Amos. Amos 3.3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed? Yes. How can, two walk together, except they be, agreed? How does that apply, to our discussion, walking in God? How can two, walk together, unless they be agreed? It's not possible now, to walk with someone, you don't agree with.
It's not possible. There will be, a lot of, strife, misunderstanding, along the way. And probably, that walk, will be cut short. Yes, and you will take, different directions. Hmm. You take different directions. In order to walk with someone, you have to be going, to the same direction. You have to be, headed to the same goal. And you have to, link your arms, or join your hearts, and move together. And God desires, to have a people, that can walk with Him.
And He will walk with you. So that there's, a unity, of agreement. Where we agree, one with another. Well, God is not going to, change His mind, and walk, the direction, we want to walk. We're going to have to, allow Him to change, our hearts. So we're walking, where He wants to walk. I love it in, the book of Leviticus, 26, verse 12. Leviticus 26, 12, says, what? But the Savior, do you have that? A short verse.
Leviticus 26, 12. Right. I will, and I, will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. That changes the perspective, doesn't it Savior? Sure. Because, it's not just me walking with God, but says God, He says, I will walk among you, and be your God. From the beginning, Savior, He's wanted to have a fellowship with us, to walk with us. He walked with, Adam and Eve, in the cool of the evening, in the garden.
And they, had sweet fellowship. I think it's, a purpose that He created mankind. One of the main purposes, is to have a fellowship, of people that He could, walk with. How can two walk together, unless, they have the same heart, the same goals. You know, often we have to humble ourselves, in order to walk with God, because our heart, when you know people, when we want something, we know how to get it, and we can pursue it.
We can, we can pursue that thing. But really, we need to again, as Cassandra said, we need to acknowledge God, and say, let's pray about this. Let's see God about this. Micah 6.8 And Cassandra, you can, you can pull up Isaiah 40.31 It's a common one, but I think that, it applies here. For the manual, Micah 6.8 Did we lose you manual? Micah 6.8 Go ahead Savior, if you have it, unmute. Micah 6.8 He has showed thee, O man, what is good, and what does the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
Walk humbly with your God. I like L.A.'s definition, how that it's measured by obedience, being a friend of God, and doing what He says. You know, in our lack of humility, we want to tell God what, what we think, rather than seeking God for what He desires. It's like James 4.10 says, humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, and He will lift you up. You know, when we walk with God, it's something that, we have to realize, that our heart, our mind has to change, to fit His will, His mind.
He loves to share His will with us. But He's, He's more willing to give, than even we are to receive. Cassandra, do you have that one in Isaiah 40.31? Isaiah 40.31, is it? Yes. Okay. It says, But there who wait for the Lord, shall renew their strength. There shall man talk with wings, like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint. Not faint. Okay, I missed that part. They will walk, and not faint.
Not get weary. Not get weary. I'm going to look at that. I'm going to look at that one, because there's a word there, that says, Those who wait upon the Lord. Brother, what's the definition of this one, in Isaiah 40.31? They that wait upon the Lord. Do you know? You mean the definition of wait? Yes. Yes. Why do you say I know? I'm thinking about it, and I can see, that waiting is part of walking with God.
And that is the only way we will not faint, while walking. Yes. That's the only way, we will not faint, while walking. Waiting, is something, the natural man would not like. But that's the only way to walk with God. I mean it's a major strategy. There have been times that, I just had to sit, and wait. I didn't necessarily shout in prayer, just wait on the Lord. I could sense it in my spirit. There's a peace, that comes with it.
There's a stability, that comes, if we can master waiting. We'll be able to escape, many things that are, as a result of impulsive actions. When somebody acts out of impulse, without thinking. As simple as, when I'm stepping out the door, and I just sit back to pray, even if it is five minutes, I find out that, I begin to recollect things I should do, oh, and things I forget. I don't know how that, whether it works for others.
If I should sit back, and be rushing out, I just quickly remember, ah, I had forgotten this. If I didn't do that, I'll probably forget that, and go out without it. But I've noticed that, it is always in my best interest, to wait a bit. Sit and wait. Wait on the Lord. Sit. It is the secret, of walking with God. Those who walk with God, have mastered waiting. That's what the Bible is telling us there. And unlike, what people think should give strength, waiting gives strength.
That's where you build, the capacity, for life. I remember there are times, there have been trouble, in my house, you know, shouting, and all that. And I'm just seated. Because the Lord will help me, not to talk, and to wait. I'm not necessarily praying, but, I have that fellowship. And that fellowship, gives me some stability, and peace. There have been times, where in the midst of trouble, I sleep, very well. I've enjoyed, that aspect, that dimension of God.
I pray to always go there. There have been times anyway, I've been so disorganized, and full of panic. But I know, that there is a path, a place in God, where, in the midst of a storm, you can have peace. The secret, is waiting. Once, a man stops waiting, it will be, he will not be long, he will begin to fence. That was the secret of Moses. Bible says, Moses stood, for seven days, before the Lord appeared.
I mean, this was a man who was fasting. Yet the Lord will have him wait, for about seven days, before he shows up in the cloud, and they will go discuss. How did Saul do, when he was supposed to wait? Man, when Saul, Daddy, I will tell you also, from my experience, the failure of waiting. There was a time, I took a fast. So, that fast was supposed to end by six. But about, two or thereabouts, instead of, because I was praying, and my head was fast.
Later, I lifted up my head, I ran to, I don't know what happened, but it was like a manipulation. And, the results, of that, raising up my head, was such that, it almost brought a scandal, to another minister. Because somebody called me at that point, asking for my help, and I didn't even ask questions. You know, I had broken, I was in a, a process, which I, aborted, prematurely. Now, it opened me up, to that manipulation.
Because that was manipulation. By the time I took the fast, and asked, to meet with someone, I didn't even ask questions, like, did this person invite you, and all that. I was just so loose, and porous. I will never forget that. If I had waited, all the way to six, that wouldn't have happened. There is no way, I would even meet this person. You know, the Lord would have me seek, I was in, it was after church practice, to just seek, and have time with God.
That was all I was supposed to do. But, I couldn't, I was like Saul. Saul couldn't wait, any longer. The Bible says, the people, were about to stoning him, the people were leaving him, so he rushed, and, acted, in, what do you call it now, presumptuously. Yes. Yes. That was it. Panic. And, all through scripture, I had to write it, in, this new note, I'm using. You see where the Bible says, consigning, waiting. The Bible says, Then Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth, upon his face, before the ark of the Lord, until evening.
Leviticus, and the Proverbs, say, and they put him in custody, till the will of the Lord, should be declared to them. So, it's a pattern, throughout scripture, that those, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who,
