Oscar Wilde, a famous writer from the 19th century, wrote two collections of short sayings called "Aphorisms". One collection was called "A Few Maxims For The Instruction Of The Over-Educated" and was published in a newspaper called the Saturday Review. The other collection was called "Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young" and was published in a magazine for Oxford students called The Chameleon. The sayings in these collections were clever, intellectual, and sometimes hard to understand. They became very popular and are often seen as typical of Wilde's writing style. Many collections of his aphorisms have been published since then.
